I’m often asked: ‘Why are you building satellites for space when there are so many problems to fix here on Earth?’ It’s a perfectly rational question. The short answer is that we need to go to space to help us here on Earth. Satellites have played an enormous role in improving the state of the world, and will do even more as an explosion of technology innovation enables large new fleets of small satellites to be deployed with radical new capabilities.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, or Global Goals), unanimously adopted at the United Nations in 2015, are a great summary of the world’s current challenges. Space is one of many important tools that can be used to help us address them. In May, the UN held a meeting on Technology Innovation and the Global Goals , and I was asked to address the role of satellites in helping the world achieve the SDGs.

The global coverage of satellites offer a unique, fact-based perspective that can help us overcome our greatest challenges. Information from these spacecraft can help us improve agricultural yields and protect habitat loss and stop deforestation. They discovered the hole in the ozone layer and their data today remains key to fighting climate change; and they’ve helped us to connect the world through internet and communication, an intangible service for millions. Satellites in space have done much for us so far and, in the future, they will offer much more.

As the world turns its attention to the Global Goals, we should look systematically at how satellites can help us reach those Earthly targets. Thus, my colleagues and I analysed the goals and found that 12 of the 17 SDGs could be reached with the help of satellites. Here are seven of the goals and examples of how satellites can help:

Goal 2: Ending Hunger

Satellite imagery can tell crop yield on a pixel by pixel basis – enabling farmers to better decide when to add water or fertilizer and when to harvest. By imaging the land using special spectral bands (such as near infra-red ) we can develop a vegetation index that represents crop vigour and productivity. Agricultural land represents 37% of the land area of earth and satellites are uniquely capable of collecting this data across such a vast territory. For example, my own company, Planet , images the whole land mass of Earth daily to help with these efforts.

Goal 6: Clean Water

Satellite images enable broad and efficient monitoring of reservoir water levels, providing early warning of shortages and uniform data across different countries that share water sources, increasing transparency and consistency in water delivery.

Goal 13: Climate Action

Often the earliest and clearest indications of climate change can be observed in very remote regions of the world. Earth-observation satellites enable global monitoring of deforestation , pollution levels in bodies of water, status of ice caps and desertification, and enable early and immediate action to prevent these events.

Goal 14: Life Below Water

Satellites can help track and stop illegal fishing by pairing vessel Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponders – which show the location of legal fishing vessels and are legally required to be switched on – with up-to-date satellite imagery, enabling the identification of vessels operating without AIS signals and which are more likely to be engaged in illegal fishing activity.

Goal 15: Life on Land

Satellites can help monitor and protect wildlife habitats by identifying indicators of impending development or destruction and alerting authorities to engage early and stop it.

Goals 3 and 4: Good Health and Well-being; and Quality Education

Just 50% of Earth’s 7.5 billion people have access to the internet. A global network of communications satellites, such as those being developed by SpaceX and OneWeb, could enable internet connectivity to a clear majority of people, especially those in remote regions where infrastructure and development is scarce. With access to the internet comes increased knowledge sharing, the benefits of the best doctors and teachers via tele-medicine and education, and greater communication.

It’s clear that satellites can help many of the Global Goals. Leaders in governments, at companies and NGOs should make maximum use of these tools in their investments and decision making to help us achieve the SDGs as fast as possible.

On 9 July 1965, the US Ambassador to the UN, Adlai Stevenson, evoked a concept of a ‘Spaceship Earth’ – later popularised by the author, Buckminster Fuller – that would motivate thinking on sustainability for decades to come. “We travel together, passengers on a little space ship, dependent on its vulnerable reserve of air and soil; all committed for our safety to its security and peace; preserved from annihilation only by the care, the work, and I will say, the love we give our fragile craft.”

So why not solve the problems here on Earth before going to space? Well, we need to go to space because we are on Spaceship Earth and, to take care of it, we need to understand it and understand better how we interact with it.

About Space Science

Science is the underpinning theme of ESA. It drives innovation and leads to progress and economic development. It inspires future generations of scientists and engineers, and it drives global information exchange and communication.

Space science makes us look outwards from our planet, to the stars and beyond. It’s a subject that strives to answer the ultimate questions: How did our Earth and our Solar System form and evolve? What is our place in the Universe? Where are we going? Where did life come from, and are we alone?

By studying the other planets in our own Solar System, we can try to place Earth in context. ESA has already sent spacecraft to Earth’s nearest planetary neighbours – Mars and Venus – to understand why they evolved so differently, and in the next decade we’ll be unlocking the secrets of the innermost planet, Mercury, too. The gas giants, and in particular Jupiter with its four large moons – some of which may harbour underground oceans – is also key to piece together the Solar System evolution. Unravelling the behaviour of our parent star, the Sun, is another crucial element to decipher our cosmic origins. And as more and more planets are found orbiting other stars, understanding our own cosmic neighbourhood has never been so important.

What about the origin of the Universe itself? If we could ‘see’ microwaves, the night sky would glow with the very first light ever released into space. This is the relic radiation of the Big Bang – the event that set the beginning to the Universe itself. With our space science missions we can tease out the details of the Universe’s earliest moments, seek out the very first stars and galaxies, and learn about the fabric of space and time. These incredible space observatories can also give us clues as to the future destiny of our Milky Way galaxy, and the Universe itself.

Why does ESA do space science? Space science is a strategic asset. With it, ESA ensures technological independence, it safeguards a European cultural identity, it supports a science-based society, and clearly demonstrates European capability and vision. ESA does what individual European nations cannot do on their own. Scientists from European nations can function at world-class level in their specialist fields. Working in this way provides a framework for national programmes, and allows integration of the best of national approaches into one joint European approach.

What is the ESA Science Programme for? The Science Programme underpins ESA. It is the only mandatory element of the ESA programme, and is therefore both a flagship and symbol for the Agency. It enhances European capability in space science and applications, builds European industrial technical capacity, and brings together European national space programmes.

Where is space science carried out? ESA staff and contractors work across Europe to make the dreams of our space scientists come true. Typically spacecraft are designed at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC), Noordwijk in The Netherlands, with ESA managing the building of the spacecraft components and its scientific instruments by European industry and academia. The components are usually then brought together and tested under space conditions at ESTEC, before being launched from Europe's Spaceport near Kourou in French Guiana. After launch, in most cases the spacecraft are operated from the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) at Darmstadt in Germany, while the scientific instruments are operated from the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) at Villanueva de Cañada in Spain. The science data from the missions are distributed to the teams who contributed the instruments in the first instance and archived at ESAC, and eventually they become accessible to the scientific community worldwide and to public. From ESAC, the Director of Science also oversees policy and the overall shape of the Science Programme.

  • On 12th September 2002, PSLV-C4 ( Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle ) successfully launched the satellite KALPANA-1 from Sriharikota.
  • ISRO’s PSLV-C7 (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) launched four satellites – India’s Space Capsule Recovery Experiment (SRE-1) and CARTOSAT-2 and Argentina’s PEHUENSAT-1 and Indonesia’s LAPAN-TUBSAT on 10th January 2007.
  • On 22nd October2008 PSLV-C11 launched Chandrayaan-1 from Sriharikota
  • India launched the earth observation satellite EOS-01 on 7th November 2020 along with nine international satellites from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.
  • On 4th January 2021, India’s Prime Minister, Sri Narendra Modi, inaugurated the National Metrology Conclave 2021.

NASA has a plan to clean up space junk—but is going green enough?

Astronomers laud NASA's plan to protect the space environment, but the agency needs to act fast to make a difference.

NASA is taking environmentalism to orbit. The space agency’s deputy administrator, Pam Melroy, recently unveiled the first phase of NASA’s new Space Sustainability Strategy . In the coming months, NASA will roll out additional   parts of the strategy, which together are designed to ensure that the space around Earth gets cleaned up—and that resources in space are shared equitably and sustainably.

“This was a long time coming,” Melroy says. Different parts of the agency have been embracing sustainability on their own and using their own approaches—now, NASA is going to make an agency-wide effort, she says.

The first phase of NASA’s sustainability strategy focuses on junk in orbit around Earth. In fact, the orbital trash problem is arguably the most pressing space issue today. Nearly 10,000 functioning satellites encircle the globe, but there are also many, many more defunct spacecraft , derelict rocket bodies, and millions of pieces of other garbage hurtling around our planet at some 17,000 miles per hour.  

Astronomers who have sounded the alarm about the increasingly crowded space around Earth have praised the new plan, but many say that the U.S. space agency is lagging behind other countries, and it needs more urgency to address this pressing issue of pollution in orbit.

“I’m very happy to see that NASA’s doing this. But I think it’s very important to see whether Congress gives them the budget to actually do anything differently,” says Darren McKnight, senior technical fellow at LeoLabs, a spacecraft and debris-tracking company based in Menlo Park, California.  

Growing pains

What is true is that any satellite orbiting in a crowded area is at increasing risk of getting smashed by an errant chunk of metal careening into it, and thus becoming trash itself.

Melroy and her colleagues at NASA are particularly concerned about the risks to the International Space Station and the astronauts aboard it—risks that were dramatized by the 2013 movie Gravity , where Sandra Bullock had to flee the orbiting outpost. In such a worst-case-scenario, the space station’s critical modules would be compromised, and any astronaut who couldn’t board a spacecraft and escape would die.

The more satellites there are, the more dangers there are, too. If there were a collision in orbit, say, between an abandoned rocket body and a dead satellite, that would beget yet more debris, risking more collisions, rendering that orbit unusable for years or decades. It’s akin to a car crash pileup on a highway lane, except there are no emergency vehicles in space and no way to clean it all up without spending millions if not billions of dollars on a years-long process.

In the new report, NASA lays out the first part of the sustainability strategy. It cites the rapidly growing satellite population and the increasingly congested space that is low Earth orbit, as well as all those hazardous bits of space junk, large and small. The report also points to the recent expansion of artificial constellations in the sky made up of thousands of satellites apiece. The largest one by far is SpaceX’s Starlink, which could eventually amass more than 40,000 spacecraft in its ranks. Amazon’s Project Kuiper plans to be not far behind.

Great garbage patch

NASA’s long-term models are useful, says McKnight, as they show how debris could continue accumulating over decades. But the agency is missing the fact that bad things are already happening now—and they need solutions now, too, he says.  

For example, on February 28, NASA’s TIMED spacecraft, which studies solar radiation in the upper atmosphere, had a close call with a 32-year-old defunct Russian satellite. The satellite was dead and so couldn’t possibly have maneuvered out of the way. If they’d been on a collision course, no one could’ve prevented it.

The stakes are higher for the International Space Station, which houses astronauts. The station has been threatened several times by orbiting garbage over the past couple years—once by a piece of an old Russian rocket and another time by shrapnel from a Russian anti-satellite missile test that took place in 2021, which delayed a planned NASA spacewalk, since debris could easily penetrate a spacesuit.  

The United States, China and India have all tested anti-satellite missiles, too, by blowing up their own satellites, creating space junk in the process. The problem was so acute that in 2022 U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris called for an international moratorium on these space-polluting weapons tests.

National Geographic Explorer Moriba Jah , who is also a University of Texas aerospace engineer and the cofounder of Privateer Space with Apple’s Steve Wozniak, says that, ultimately, NASA and other space agencies and companies need to face the fact that “the fate of everything we launch is to become trash, and that needs to change.”  

Taking action

Some agencies are already trying to do as Jah suggests—and NASA is playing catch up. The European Space Agency released its   zero debris approach more than a year ago. It has specific targets the agency plans to meet by 2030 to reduce risks of satellite-trash collisions in orbit. The United Kingdom’s Space Agency, meanwhile, announced it would put a premium on space sustainability in 2023, and Japan has started to invest in private space companies dedicated to addressing space debris, too. Japan is also working with the United Nations to raise awareness of the problem worldwide.   While NASA has been lagging, some American regulatory agencies like the Federal Communications Commission have their own space junk rules. In 2022 the FCC imposed new rules designed to force telecom companies to dispose of their old spacecraft rather than letting them drift in orbit for decades. The Federal Aviation Administration also has proposed a rule to make space companies dispose of upper-stage rocket bodies left in orbit.

But NASA’s strategy could be a significant step forward, Jah says. Yet it’s also a missed opportunity to link to waste management principles already developed for land, ocean, and air pollution, he says.  

“The space community is trying to reinvent the wheel,” Jah says. Unlike its European counterpart, NASA also currently lacks a concrete plan to develop a circular space economy, which means redesigning spacecraft, experimenting with new materials and fuels, and reusing and recycling satellites rather than deploying so many single-use ones.  

Cleanup time

NASA is late to the debris cleanup party, too. A mission called Active Debris Removal by Astroscale-Japan, or ADRAS-J, launched in February and is now attempting to safely approach an old rocket body left in orbit 15 years ago. The team’s aim is to image the giant hunk of space garbage, characterize its condition and movements, and synchronize the ADRAS-J spacecraft’s spin with that of the rocket body—all precursors to removing it from orbit, which a future mission could accomplish.  

Meanwhile, in 2026, the European Space Agency and a private company called Clearspace plan to launch a spacecraft that will use robotic arms to capture a 250-pound rocket part and safely tug it down into the atmosphere, where it and the spacecraft will both safely burn up. According to the U.S. Space Force, the rocket part they’re targeting appears to have itself been hit by smaller debris last summer, further demonstrating the problem and the need for action.

America will certainly lead its own space junk disposal missions, NASA’s Melroy says, but the agency still has to flesh out its space sustainability plan before it makes any major decisions. She’s already familiar with myriad concepts for decluttering orbit, having previously served at DARPA, an agency that explores far-out ideas, including concepts for using harpoons, nets, or an orbital catcher’s mitt to grab litter in space.   NASA’s annual budgets ultimately depend on Congress, which cut the agency’s fiscal year 2024 budget by 2 percent, with the   Mars sample return mission and other programs losing some funding. A debris disposal mission would be a major new investment. NASA’s cost-benefit analysis demonstrates that removing the top 50 most concerning objects in low Earth orbit—mostly derelict rocket bodies and other objects orbiting near critical satellites—would be expensive but worthwhile in the long run. It would also make financial sense to develop lasers and other technologies that could be used to nudge debris out of harm’s way to prevent imminent collisions, according to that analysis.

But designing and deploying such garbage-hauling tech will take years, and scaling it up will take longer than that.

Ultimately, getting rid of space trash now is important, but “active debris removal cannot be used as a panacea,” says Aaron Boley, a planetary scientist at the University of British Columbia and cofounder of the Outer Space Institute, a network of space experts.  

“I’m pleased they put out this strategy on space sustainability. There’s a lot of work to be done,” he says. It’s also necessary to change behavior, for example, since it’s impossible to clean up the mess if people keep polluting and leaving more junk up in orbit.  

And he argues that the reflectivity of spacecraft altering the night sky should be considered part of space sustainability, too. Boley and his colleagues wrote a paper in March about satellite visibility during 2024's April 8 total solar eclipse that was viewed by millions of people in North America.  

Earth’s orbit marks the cusp of outer space—and sustainability will have to extend beyond that.  

To the moon

The rest of NASA’s strategy will include long-term plans for the moon and its orbit and for deep space, which includes Mars and asteroids.  

Through the Artemis moon program, NASA’s racing to develop a lunar outpost and a space station, while China, Russia, and the commercial space industry have their own designs for the moon, too.  

But there’s limited resources on the moon. That means NASA's use of any water ice there has to take others' needs, including those of future generations, into account. Such considerations will play into NASA’s sustainability efforts, Melroy says. “I think these things will evolve with time as we learn, but we’re going to be focused on preserving areas of scientific significance and areas of historic significance and great natural beauty.”

Melroy likens NASA’s approach to space sustainability to its work on climate change, as the space agency has for decades been studying the Earth’s climate as a holistic system and promoting sustainability on our own planet.  

The climate analogy is apt for the space junk crisis in another way too, McKnight says. “This is like global warming in the sense that we see it coming. But no one wants to act until it’s really a problem,” he says.  

“We’re kind of waiting for something bad to happen so that we’ll respond, but it’s better to deter or deny a threat than recover from it. I applaud NASA taking this step, but I hope it’s with the right level of urgency.”

Science and technology have continued to play a central role in providing means through which people improve their well-being and health, alleviate poverty, and define themselves as a nation and people. Many societies are built on a firm foundation of science and technology and irrevocably dependent on them. As such, science and technology will continue to play a major role in shaping our lives and nation. It will change how people communicate and interact with each other, how people work, travel and how students learn. Technological innovation in the next 50 years will rival innovation that took place in the past 400 years.

According to Reuters, businesses and schools will go paperless as papers are replaced by computer interfaces built into furniture and walls. Advances in communication, energy distribution, and storage in consumer products and businesses will support a technology known as “room ware” that will support this breakthrough. Offices Tables, walls, and cafeteria tables will double as terminals that will allow a person to write down the idea and send it to a personal desk or computer located somewhere else. School and office Walls and windows will have the capability to display maps and direction commands to help locate particular offices, staff, classrooms, etc ( Reuters, 2009). As offices/schools go paperless, the environment will benefit from reduced dependent on the tree for paper production.

After a long period of stability as the main choice of storage DVD and CD, media will be replaced by credit card type media by 2015. As the internet becomes more flexible coupled with the availability of cheap massive storage space, high data transfer rate, people will no longer need physical storage media to store data. File storage and access will be done remotely due to the convenience brought by the internet. Movies will only be available for download from the internet and that the user will need to access code to get movies and data. (B, 2009)

Innovation in Science and Technology will also change travel. People will be traveling on sky car that will be cruising comfortably at a speed of 300Miles per hour using regular fuel. The sky car will be equipped with onboard computers and will be fully automated. This means that one will not need a license to fly the sky car. The sky car will be equipped with redundant engines for safety purposes just in case the main engine fails (FutureCars.com, 2010). The cost of a new sky car will be equal to that of a luxury car once mass production begins. Sky car will be cost less to main and will launch and land at a pad the size of the dining room. Using sky car, people will be able to avoid traffic, spending tickets and save travel time.

Other speculations about the future include the availability of cheap, advanced personal equipment for self-diagnosis for illnesses that currently require a costly medical diagnosis. This will reduce the cost of health care and health insurance, hence lowering the cost of living. It will also lead to better health. Robots will also become part of mainstream life, in form of interactive toys, household items like carpets and pets will require no maintenance (Mooneyham, 2005).

The future will be shaped greatly by continued innovation in science and technology. Offices will go paperless and papers will be replaced by a computer interface inbuilt on office furniture and walls. DVD and CD media will be replaced by credit card types of media as people turn to online data storage and access. Technology innovation will also have a great impact on travel with the introduction of sky cars, which will result in reduced travel time and traffic congestion. New health equipment will help people to diagnose themselves for diseases, hence reducing the cost of health care, leading to better health.

1.   With all the troubles in the world today, money spent on space exploration is a complete waste. The money could be better spent on other things.

Nations after nations, everyday, every year, celebrate their achievements in space  exploration . However, it is now time to question how meaningful these blasts are. This  essay aims to explain why it is questionable.

First, until all urgent and important matters in this globe have been solved, money  bumped on space exploration is of no meaning. It is not a common sense at all to invest  million dollars researching and producing foods for astronauts (for space exploration  purpose), while everyday thousands of people are starving. Furthermore, the discovery  of outer space only serves a minor group of people if the majority are even not well-educated. Those in rural areas or third-world nations do no even know how to prevent  common threatening diseases like AIDS and lung cancer.

Then, some may argue that the purpose of space exploration are to discover new lands,  new energy resources or to deter potential threat to globe. Nevertheless, is it effective to  do so while other alternatives are available? Lands on earth are no yet effectively used.  New energy resources (e.g. solar and nuclear energy) have not yet been widely-used.  Threats of plagues have not yet been deterred. All these ? not- yets? need money. That  is why costly space discovery programs are a waste of money.

In the nutshell, people should only invest in space exploration providing that early-mentioned urgent and important matters have been solved. Also, purposes of space  exploration campaign should be studied carefully and other alternatives should be  considered before money is wasted.

2.   Some say that the internet is making the world smaller by bringing people together. To what extent do to you agree that the internet is making it easier for people to communicate with one another.

A global village, that is certainly what the world feels like nowadays. With the help of the  world wide web, you can reach out and get to know people you might never meet in  person. Articles can be coauthored, business deals can be finalized, degrees can be  earned and at times even medical advice can be given? and all of this is just a click  away.

Electronic mail, instant messages, web cameras and microphones; all these gadgets  and programs make the presence of the other the person more real. Who knows; with  the help of visual reality you might even get a 3-D image of the speaker! I believe that  the internet is one the best inventions of the last century, you can hardly get to miss  anyone and nobody is really out of reach. You will get to keep the channels patent with  your friends, and will be able to do your work from your bedroom in your pajamas!

However, the internet can also be a major source of harassment. Spammers and  hackers can invade your privacy and get personal/confidential information, which  otherwise they will never get access to. You are never out of anybody’s reach, unless  you make a conscious decision of not checking your email, there can be always more  work waiting for you in your inbox and you might never have a moment for yourself.  Worse, if you were a workaholic, you might never experience that stress-free vacation  ever again in your life? simply, because you have your mobile workplace with you.

As a romantic, I will always look forward to getting an occasional letter in the snail mail.  A personal letter, where I can sense the mood of the writer by the slants in his/her  handwriting and get to know him/her better. But as a type A personality person, the  internet gives me all what I dream of in communication? speed, reliability, and  convenience of time and place. I can certainly tolerate its shortcomings any day, as long  as it keeps me close to my loved ones.

3.   Internet when used as a source of information, has more drawbacks than advantages. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

Some people believe that internet access creates problems. There are several possible reasons why it can happen.

First, some data may be unverifiable. For example, everytime they search for a data,  there would be lots of choices that would appear on the screen. They would not be sure  if the data they are reading has accurate information. Some sources have even  outdated informations. Second, some sites may be unreliable. For instance, people sign  up on one site that sells goods using online purchases. The goods would be paid for by  credit card but the purchaser would not receive anything. And finally, not everything is  available through the net. When my friend had tried to research for some pictures of  18th century paintings, he did not find any results. Then he was told by his teacher that  it would only be available in the library.

Others believe that internet is very useful and these are the justifications. First, it is hard  to get data, that is available in the net by other means. For example, if directory  information could not give me the accurate address and contact number of the place I want to visit, I normally check that information from the Internet. In just one click, I would  get all the details of that certain company. Second, research becomes more  comprehensive. For instance, I do not have to buy lots of reading materials to complete  my research. Most of the needed information can be found if I have Internet access.  And finally, data is easily compared and contrasted. I remember, my cousin researched  the study about overweight children a decade ago and at present. He was able to finish  his research in just one day, as compared to week if he would not use the Internet.

In conclusion, let me reiterate that the Internet plays a big role in our life, because it  makes data retrieval and comparison easier.

4.    We have been living in the nuelear age now for over half a century. Since the first atomic bombs were developed, nuclear technology has provided governments with the ability to totally destroy the planet. Yet the technology has been put to positive use as an energy source and in certain areas of medicine. To what extent is nuclear technology a danger to life on Earth? What are the benefits and risks associated with its use?

These days, many people are afraid of nuclear technology because of the dangers  associated with its use. In my opinion, although it is true that nuclear weapons pose the  greatest threat to life, the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes also carries  some serious risks.

Nuclear power stations provide an important source of cheap power for many  industrialised nations and some developing countries. However, there is always the  danger of radiation leaking from these plants. Even though safety precautions are  taken, there have been numerous disasters such as the explosion of a nuclear plant in Russia not long ago.

Nuclear technology is even used to help cure some diseases such as cancer. Radiation  can be applied to the body to burn away cancerous cells. This is, however, a dangerous  procedure, and the application of radiation is almost always painful and not always  successful. The most worrying aspect of nuclear technology, though, is its use for military purposes.  Enough atomic bombs have already been built to completely destroy the planet, and the  real danger is that one day some country will start a war with these weapons. Too many  countries now have the technology required to make such bombs, and there is currently  much debate about how to control the situation.

In conclusion, nuclear technology certainly has positive uses, but is, nonetheless,  dangerous. However, it would have been better if it had never been used to create  nuclear weapons. If life on Earth is to continue.

5.   ‘Telecommuting’ refers to workers doing their jobs from home for part of each week and communicating with their office using computer technology. Telecommuting is growing in many countries and is expected to be common for most office workers in the coming decades. How do you think society will be affected by the growth of telecommuting?

The spread of telecommuting is sure to have far-reaching effects on society. By itself,  telecommuting refers to office workers spending much of their time working from home and  using electronic technologies to communicate with their employers. The broader implications of  telecommuting, however, may involve changes to corporate structure, workers’ lifestyles and  even urban planning.

The most obvious changes may be apparent in the `normal’ offices of companies, governments  and other organisations. If even half the working week is spent telecommuting from home, then  we would initially expect many empty desks in the office. As offices grow smaller, workers  coming in for the day would be expected to share desks with their absent colleagues. This, in  turn, may affect the social atmosphere of an organisation, however, as less social contact with  one’s colleagues could harm morale and loyalty.

For the individual office worker, telecommuting would mean spending more time at home. For a  parent with young children, this may be a blessing. Moreover, many telecommuters would be  able to work the hours they wished: having a nap in the afternoon, for example, but working  some hours in the evening. One substantial benefit for all telecommuting workers is that there  will be no need to travel to work, allowing more free time.

The structure of urban life is also likely to be affected by telecommuting. We would expect to  see fewer cars on the road during peak hours and, eventually, a smaller concentration of offices  in cities’ central business districts. In short, people will have less reason to travel to city centres  from outlying areas. As more people work and live in the same location, shops and cultural  events will likely relocate themselves out of the city centre.

In sum, telecommuting will serve not only to change the way we work but also the way we live.

6.    Telecommuting: will it change the world?

Telecommuting will have major effects in the worlds of work and family life. However, its  biggest effect will be in the area of individual freedom, responsibility, and time  management.

Work and workplaces will alter dramatically. Offices may become smaller, as fewer  desks are needed. There will be greater need for high-bandwidth connections to link the  office and the home, and even homes to other homes, as other employees and  supervisors also begin working at home. Hours spent commuting, traffic jams, and fights  for parking should diminish, as workers make fewer journeys or work staggered hours.

Family life will also change. Workers, both husbands and wives, can arrange their work  around family commitments such as taking children to school, cooking, leisure activities,  etc. However, households will also have to set aside areas for work – particularly if both  spouses are telecommuting.

However, although the ideas of more time at home and less time traveling are attractive,  there are some drawbacks to telecommuting. People may feel unable to escape their  work, and may even work longer or more unsocial hours. The quality of work may suffer  because of the reduced face-to-face interaction with other employees. There may be  delays if other workers are not immediately available. Telecommuters may feel isolated  or unmotivated, or insecure about decisions. A major change will be in the way people  think about work as a place or an institution. Instead, they will focus on the task or product. Workers may feel less loyal to a company and more inclined to change jobs or  work part-time or on contract.

In conclusion, the effects are difficult to predict because they depend on the extent to  which telecommuting becomes popular. However, telecommuting could be the start of a  major societal shift, possibly as big as the Industrial Revolution which created our  present ideas of work.

7.    With the increasing popularity of computers and calculators, student literacy is decreasing dramatically. What are the positive and negative effects the progress of science and technology has brought about?

It has been widely noted that, with the growing use of computers and calculators both in the  classroom and in the home, the level of literacy and mathematical ability of students is dropping.  This raises serious doubts about the value of the progress of science and technology. Here I will  discuss the pros and cons of this question.

First of all, advances in science and technology have certainly brought about many benefits for  mankind. They have made our lives more comfortable and healthier. In addition, they have  eased the burden of work for most people and provided them with more leisure opportunities,  while at the same time increasing productivity dramatically.

Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that technology has some negative side-effects. As  mentioned above, with computers which check spelling, grammar and calculation for them,  students have little incentive to learn how to do these things for themselves. Also, the availability  of TV programs and videos encourages an unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle.

Another aspect of this issue is that technology may be good or bad, depending on how we use  it. For instance, dynamite may be used to make road construction easier, or it may be used to  kill people. Again, nuclear reactors can supply huge amounts of cheap electricity, but if they are  carelessly handled they can cause devastating pollution.

We can conclude that the progress of science and technology has both positive and negative  effects. What we must do is to make sure that the positive ones are encouraged and the  negative ones are eliminated as far as possible. Among other things, this means that students  are warned not to let computers and calculators do all their work for them.
