Before searching for an architecture thesis topic, you must be familiar with the writing structure of a dissertation. Here we’ve mentioned the basic structure of a dissertation so that it gets easy for you when drafting a dissertation:

  • Title – The title of your Architecture Dissertation must focus on your research objective.

How to Choose the Right Architecture Thesis Topic?

If you are finding it hard to choose the right topic for your dissertation, here are some tips that might help what you can put your focus on while drafting your dissertation:

Select a relevant topic for your architecture dissertation as it contributes a lot to your career and future. To obtain a master’s degree in education, you need to find relevant topics for a dissertation. The topic must be capable of providing you with a significant amount of content for your architecture dissertation.

An Architecture dissertation must be broad enough to explore the whole topic. The dissertation must include a clear structure to contribute to the argumentation you are going to include in your dissertation.

Pay equal attention to the Research Questions you are going to include. Do not ever select narrow questions which are supposed to be answered with a Yes or No. Choose questions that provide you with relevant answers such as

  • How do creative designs impact the modern era?
  • What do you think about modern architecture?

Architecture students who are writing a dissertation are always provided with guidance. Supervisors are assigned to guide students throughout the duration of their architecture dissertation. So do not forget to ask for feedback or a piece of advice from your supervisors as they have years of academic experience, so their recommendations and feedback will only add to your research.

Before choosing an architecture topic, make sure you research thoroughly about the chosen topic. Try to select topics that are relevant in today’s time. The content provided by the topic must be more than enough to expand and support your arguments.

RMA Architects 1990-2020

Curated by kaiwan mehta, a project produced by goethe-institut / max mueller bhavan and the architecture foundation., the exhibition will show at gallery mmb, goethe-institut / max mueller bhavan mumbai from 27 october to 31 december, 2021. monday to saturday, 11:00 am to 7 pm..

The last 30 years mark a crucial history for India, as well as the world in many ways. Changing face of economic policies, new dynamics emerging in the cultural and social world of people and communities in India, dramatic shifts in urban environments and the rising concern with identity politics on one hand, to debates on heritage, belonging, and cosmopolitanism, on the other, with our digital lives shaking the ground beneath the solid physical place that mattered solely at one point, have been moulding our recent experiences. While new debates and formulations have emerged across the world these have played out in India in specific areas of public as well as private life.

RMA Architects , established in 1990, recently completed 30 years of a robust practice that has designed and built architectural projects across India as well as a few important projects abroad. It has also been a practice very involved in various research projects in areas such as architectural conservation, urban development, policy formulation for the built environment, etc. Rahul Mehrotra, who founded and leads RMA Architects has himself been a figure in contemporary India’s architectural scenario playing multiple roles besides running an architecture practice – a public figure running or being involved in various public institutions, platforms and projects, he is also an academic and a historian with an impressive repertoire of research projects and publications.

We often wonder, in what ways does the practice and work of an architectural studio play a role in dynamic times such as the last 30 years we have witnessed. How does one understand what is the practice of architecture? What makes practices within a generation similar and yet how does a significant practice establish its own routes of work and ideas? Rahul Mehrotra set up his architecture studio in the 1990s one of the most tumultuous decades in India and Mumbai’s history… as a researcher, critic, and academic he has written as much as his studio has built… what does his practice signify, and more importantly what does his practice tell us about our contemporary history? We discuss the idea of architecture practice in contemporary India, while we think along with buildings that 30 years of RMA Architects have designed and built, with a special focus on six recent projects.

The exhibition proposes three registers or reading the work and journey of RMA Architects:

  • Annotated Chronology: 30 years of the studio’s work is drawn up in detail and annotated with special notes and studies by the curator
  • Bench of Models: A curated collection of models showing different stages of the design process in the life of a building project are brought into the exhibition to discuss the studio’s design process
  • We review in detail six recent projects, in fact two currently in stages of construction, as a way of entering into the larger concerns and ideologies of the studio in their approach to architecture, city, profession, and the practice of an architect.

The projects include three contemporary interventions at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Mumbai; Lab for the Future at Basel Switzerland, Lilavati Lalbhai Library at CEPT University; School for Arts and Sciences at Ahmedabad University; JSW School of Public Policy, at IIM Ahmedabad and Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Worli Smashan Bhumi, Mumbai

This exhibition is also contextualized, and book-ended between two recent publications – Working in Mumbai (2020) and Kinetic City and Other Essays (2021) . Besides these two publications, the exhibition also displays a large collection of books on RMA projects as well as those authored or edited by Rahul Mehrotra.

Rahul Mehrotra Rahul Mehrotra is the founder principal of RMA Architects. He divides his time between working in Mumbai and Boston and teaching at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University where he is Professor of Urban Design and Planning and the John T. Dunlop Professor in Housing and Urbanization. In 2012-2015, he led a Harvard University-wide research project with Professor Diana Eck, called  The Kumbh Mela: Mapping the Ephemeral Mega City . This work was published as a book in 2014 and extended in 2017 in the form of a book titled  Does Permanence Matter?  Mehrotra’s also co – authored a book is  titled Taj Mahal : Multiple Narratives  which was published in Dec 2017. His most recent book is titled  Working in Mumbai ( 2020) and is a reflection on his practice evolved through its association with the city of Bombay/Mumbai.

RMA Architects RMA Architects is an architectural practice with studios in Mumbai and Boston. From a studio established in Mumbai by Rahul Mehrotra in 1990, the practice was re-formed as RMA Architects in 2010.

Led by four Principal Architects , Robert Stephens ,Payal Patel , Nondita Correa Mehrotra and Rahul Mehrotra, and a core group of Design Associates, the studio works actively with local craftspeople and contractors to develop and refine construction details and methods of building that are relevant, sustainable, and founded on local knowledge. By working with varied constituencies, and through a multiplicity of modes of engagement with practice, RMA Architects endeavors to develop and evolve culturally specific design solutions for each unique context.

  • ABOUT CENTER

Center for Research on Architecture and Urbanism (CAU)

The Center for Research on Architecture and Urbanism (CAU) was set up in August 2019 with the aim to become a place of research excellence and serve as a reliable and reputed knowledge repository. It will draw its strength from CEPT’s unique position of being India’s premier institution for education in Architecture since 1960. It recognises the fact that architectural and urbanism education and practice require research support in the form of relevant information, critical analysis, and teaching texts. This is now more important given the unprecedented transformation of our cities and the opportunities and challenges that they pose. The center is particularly conscious of the limited existence of India-specific content and aims to bridge this gap.

CAU draws upon the resources of talent within CEPT and also from an impressive network of scholars collaborating with CEPT University. The center’s activities include new research, textbooks, and innovative practice-related manuals for academia and industry can use. The center also mentors young researchers to become future research leaders by engaging them as partners.

The Under graduate research in Architecture is a part of final semester academic curriculum. It gives students an opportunity to explore their area of Interest. Students are expected to understand in depth the topic they chose by going through literature and required field visits. Their process and progress are reviewed at various stages by the faculty members and experts in the fields. This exercise is considered most crucial in the whole curriculum because this is what a student carries throughout his life as an academic project manifesting his interest, capacity and skill.

Research in Architecture in India

Madhavi Desai

Tekton Volume 5, Issue 2, September 2018 pp. 70 – 79

research topics in architecture in india

Her most recent book, Women Architects and Modernism in India: Narratives and Contemporary Practices (Routledge, 2017) chronicles her research on participation of women in post-independence Indian architecture. She is at present working on an edited book, tentatively titled, Gender and the Indian City: Re-visioning Design and Planning. She is a member of the nominating committee of the Berkeley-Rupp Professorship and Prize at the University of California, Berkeley, USA since 2012.

In this Practice essay, Prof. Desai draws from her vast experience to dwell on the issue of research in India. She creates a comprehensive scenario as it exists of relationship of research with academia and practice, which is far from ideal. She comments on this while speculating on possible directions for research that can fill the gap in knowledge generation in the discipline.

[email protected]

Knowledge Generation in a Discipline “The building industry, the architectural profession, the school of architecture – none is structured in a way that facilitates or promotes systematic inquiry for knowledge building.”

In any discipline, research is considered the core of knowledge production and theory generation. In architecture and design, in the perception of the society and within the profession, the practice and the practitioners have been at the forefront of the disciplines connected with the built environment. Despite of there being three wings of a discipline – practice, academics and research – the crucial component of research is relatively marginalized due to a lack of long standing and respected tradition in institutions of higher learning and in the architectural profession as well.

The development of scholarship in the field during the postcolonial times has been rather meagre, to say the least. Marginalization of knowledge creation deeply affects theory and application. As a result, there is a lacuna in well researched and documented publications or analytical studies on the Indian design sensibilities that are historical, regional or critical in nature. This limitation is acutely felt in teaching where a heavy reliance on western publications still exists, especially in courses on theory, history and technology. On the other hand, practitioners have traditionally relied largely on intuition, design principles and precedents in their design process. Most of them continue to do so because research and theory are not viewed as productive tools in actual practice. In addition, the architectural critic, who can play a role especially in improving the quality of public architecture and urban design is rather invisible in India. This essay attempts to take a broad look at the interconnectedness between research, practice and academics in India while stressing the urgency and importance of knowledge generation.

Practitioners have traditionally relied largely on intuition, design principles and precedents in their design process. Most of them continue to do so because research and theory are not viewed as productive tools in actual practice.

Background The modern discipline of architecture is relatively young dating back to the colonial era. In the medieval period, edifices were constructed by craftspeople based on regional manuals that were derived from the principles of ancient building science treatises. Much change occurred when the profession of architecture got established and architects began designing from mid-nineteen century onwards. From British and other European architects who came from abroad, to European firms established in India who took on Indian architects as partners, to finally firms run by Indians, a great transformation occurred in the nature of the profession as well as the production of architecture.

20 Types of Architecture thesis topics

research topics in architecture in india

An architectural thesis is perhaps the most confusing for a student because of the range of typologies of buildings that exist. It also seems intimidating to pick your site program and do all the groundwork on your own. While choosing an architectural thesis topic, it is best to pick something that aligns with your passion and interest as well as one that is feasible. Out of the large range of options, here are 20 architectural thesis topics .

1. Slum Redevelopment (Urban architecture)

Slums are one of the rising problems in cities where overcrowding is pertinent. To account for this problem would be one of great value to the city as well as the inhabitants of the slum. It provides them with better sanitation and well-being and satisfies their needs.

2. Maggie Center (Healthcare architecture)

This particular typology of buildings was coined by a cancer patient,  Margaret Keswick Jencks,   who believed that cancer-treatment centres’ environment could largely improve their health and wellbeing by better design. This led a large number of starchitects to participate and build renowned maggie centres.

3. Urban Sprawl Redesign (Urban design)

The widening of city boundaries to accommodate migrants and overcrowding of cities is very common as of late. To design for the constant urban sprawl would make the city life more convenient and efficient for all its users.

4. Redesigning Spaces Under Elevated Roads and Metros (Urban infrastructure)

A lot of space tends to become dead space under metros or elevated roads. To use these spaces more efficiently and engage them with the public would make it an exciting thesis topic.

5. Urban Parks (Urban landscape)

Urban parks are not only green hubs for the city, which promotes the well-being of the city on a larger level, but they also act as great places for the congregation and bring a community together.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet5

6. Reusing Abandoned Buildings (Adaptive reuse)

All buildings after a point become outdated and old but, what about the current old and abandoned buildings? The best way to respond to these is not by demolishing them; given the amount of effort it takes to do so, but to enhance them by restoring and changing the building to current times.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet6

7. Farming in Cities (Green urban spaces)

With climate change and population on the rise, there is statistical proof that one needs to start providing farming in cities as there is not sufficient fertile land to provide for all. Therefore, this makes a great thesis topic for students to explore.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet7

8. Jails (Civil architecture)

To humanize the function of jails, to make it a place of change and rehabilitation, and break from the stereotypical way of looking at jails. A space that will help society look at prisoners as more than monsters that harm, and as fellow humans that are there to change for everyone’s betterment.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet8

9. Police Academies (Civil architecture)

Academies that train people to be authoritative and protective require spaces for training mentally and physically; focussing on the complexity of the academy and focussing on the user to enhance their experience would work in everyone’s favour.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet9

10. High Court (Civil architecture)

Courtrooms are more often than not looked at as spaces that people fear, given the longevity of court cases. It can be a strenuous space; therefore, understanding the user groups’ state of mind and the problems faced can be solved using good design.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet10

11. Disaster-resilient structures (Disaster-relief architecture)

Natural disasters are inevitable. Disaster-resilient structures are build suitably for the natural disasters of the region while also incorporating design into it, keeping in mind the climatic nature of the location.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet11

12. Biophilic design (Nature-inspired architecture)

As humans, we have an innate love for nature, and the struggle between integrating nature and architecture is what biophilic design aims towards. To pick a topic where one would see minimal use of natural elements and incorporate biophilic design with it would be very beneficial.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet12

13. Metro stations and Bus terminals (Transportation spaces)

Bus terminals and metro stations are highly functional spaces that often get crowded; and to account for the crowd and the problems that come with it, plus elevate the experience of waiting or moving, would contribute to making it a good thesis topic.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet13

14. Airport design (Transportation spaces)

Airport designing is not very uncommon; however, it is a rather complex program to crack; thereby, choosing this topic provides you with the opportunity to make this space hassle-free and work out the most efficient way to make this conducive for all types of users.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheetv14

15. Sports Complex (Community architecture)

If your passion lies in sports, this is a go-to option. Each sport is played differently, different materials are used, and the nature of the sport and its audience is rather complicated. However, to combine this and make it a cohesive environment for all kinds of users would make a good thesis topic.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet15

16. Stadium (Community architecture)

Unlike a sports complex, one could also pick one sport and look at the finer details, create the setting, and experience for it; by designing it to curate a nice experience for the players, the public, and the management.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet16

17. Waste-recycling center (Waste management)

Reducing waste is one of the most fundamental things we must do as humans. Spaces where recycling happens must be designed consciously. Just like any other space, it has been given importance over the years, and this would make a good thesis topic to provide the community with.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet17

18. Crematorium (Public architecture)

Cremation of a loved one or anyone for that matter is always a rather painful process and a range of emotions is involved when it comes to this place. Keeping in mind the different types of people and emotions and making your thesis about this would mean to enhance this experience while still keeping the solemnity of it intact.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet18

19. Museums (Community architecture)

Museums are spaces of learning, and the world has so much to offer that one could always come up with different typologies of museums and design according to the topic of one’s interest. Some of the examples would be cultural heritage, modern art, museum of senses, and many more.

20 Types of thesis topics - Sheet19

20. Interpretation center (Community architecture)

An interpretation center is a type of museum located near a site of historical, cultural, or natural relevance that provides information about the place of interest through various mediums.

Architecture Thesis: A culmination of all those years of intense training, sleepless nights, countless submissions and unforgettable memories. The grand finale!

It is a real test to showcase all the skills you’ve gained over the years in a single project. Naturally, choosing the right topic from an ocean of architecture thesis topics is one of the biggest challenges you can face as a final year student, as the topic itself may define the trajectory of your thesis!

To ease your conflicted mind, we have curated a comprehensive list of popular architecture thesis projects you might want to explore in your final year, along with links to relevant theses across the internet for your ready reference.

Go on, have a look! What sparks your interest?

Housing/ Residential Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project by an undergraduate student on low-cost housing community development for fishermen in Bangladesh

1. Affordable Housing

“Housing for all” is a major goal developing countries are striving to achieve. Not everyone has the resources to own a house or even rent one out. Conscious and well-planned housing design can turn cities into places where owning a house is not merely a dream. And architects can play a pivotal role in achieving this noble goal.

2. Gated Communities

With the city centres choking with pollution, traffic congestion and over-population, many people are now moving to the suburbs in closed, secure and private gated communities. These colonies circumference almost every major city now, with more emerging as you read. A gated community design could be an interesting (though slightly controversial) architecture thesis topic to explore residential neighbourhood planning.

3. Modular/ Disaster Relief/ Emergency Shelters

Land and resources are limited but the demand for them only keeps increasing giving rise to environmental hazards like deforestation, pollution and depletion of natural assets. In a rapidly changing, calamity-prone world, the design of modular, mobile, disaster relief shelters is the need of the hour!

4. Slum Redevelopment

Urban informality may be a fascinating, complex issue to tackle for your architecture thesis projects. Many people have varied opinions on the dense, informal urban developments popularly known as ‘slums’ , but few are willing to tackle the difficult issue from top to bottom (or bottom up!). Are you one of the few?

Institutional Projects

5. Educational and Skill-Training Institutions

Schools play an important role in shaping a person and are key in bringing up generations of bright individuals. Educational and skill-training institutions have vast options, ranging from kindergartens to higher-education institutes; schools of dance to special-needs institutes ! Ready to shape minds?

6. Rehabilitation and Wellness Institutions

A sound mind and sound body are key to a happy life!

Unfortunately, sometimes individuals have to be institutionalised to get their health back on track. Rehabilitation centres and centres for people with depression or trauma aim at people’s mental wellness, while public gyms and civic sports centres aim at people’s physical wellness. If healing architecture and landscape is something you like, this could be the best architecture thesis topic for you!

7. Research Institutions

Progress in science, technology and humanities improves our way of living and ensures our well-being. The Sheldon Coopers among us wouldn’t be happy to see any fewer research centres and laboratories than there are!

Public Infrastructure Projects

8. Hospitals

Healthcare services are undoubtedly the most important services any region needs. The pandemic has made us understand how under-equipped even the best hospitals can be and so there is an even bigger reason for every hospital, be it multi-speciality/ speciality , maternity, special needs, public or private , to be as well designed as possible. This, more than ever, is the need of the hour and can make for a pressing architecture thesis project.

9. Transit Hubs

Airports , Bus Terminals , Railway Stations , Inland Waterways, Seaports.

Do you love to travel? Have you ever waited for a train and imagined how much better that railway station could be? Then what are you waiting for? Be the change!

10. Sports Stadia

Remember that first stadium experience of watching a cricket or football match? The energy of the crowd, the adrenaline rush! Most group sports stadia ( Cricket , Football , Hockey, Baseball, etc) and sports cities require meticulous study before designing, making a very suitable architecture thesis project for students.

11. Urban/Street Redevelopment

How often do we walk the streets of our cities and almost die because a bike passed within inches of us? Street redevelopment projects catering to pedestrianisation are proven to improve the lives of millions and are rapidly gaining urgency in the urban design domain.

These projects often require extensive site study. Not sure what all to cover in your site analysis? Read - Site Analysis Categories You Need to Cover For Your Architecture Thesis Project .

12. Waterfront Development

Rivers are considered sacred and life-giving across the world. The pitiful conditions of water bodies today have led urban designers to take up River/Canal-front Development Projects which aim at minimising water pollution, a smooth transition from land to water, and ultimately encouraging visitors for leisure and fun activities.

13. Public Parks and Plazas

Parks are the lungs of the concrete jungles many of us live in. After a day of intense work, all we need is some greenery and fresh air; or to grab a beer at that corner cafe in the city square! The design of public parks, plazas and playgrounds could be the best architecture thesis topic for an urban/landscape enthusiast.

14. Social Infrastructure

A robust, well-functioning society accommodates and facilitates the wellness of all its citizens and living beings. Infrastructure like orphanages , nursing homes , animal shelters , night shelters , daycare centres, banks, prisons , juvenile schools, community development centres , and many more tend to those social needs of the society which cannot be overlooked. Inclined towards public welfare? Look no further!

Socio-Cultural Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project of a museum of modern arts

15. Community and Convention Centres

Humans are social animals. Now and then, we crave a meet-and-greet. Community and Convention Centres cater to this very need, and exploring the design angles for human interaction may be something worthy of your architecture thesis project. Be ready for competition though, this is one of the most popular architecture thesis topics students undertake!

16. Museums and Libraries

The culture-lovers among us would understand the value of a good museum or library and appreciate a well-designed one. Be it a museum of arts and crafts, culture, architecture , history or science, if the give and take of knowledge through some entertainment and delight (infotainment) is something you see yourself doing, then this could be the best architecture thesis topic for you.

17. Memorials

Memorials are the physical manifestations of the struggles endured, victories earned and life-changing events in history. They remind us to never forget the past, hoping for a better future at the same time, making memorial design both a fascinating yet weighted exercise.

18. Places of Worship/ Spiritual Centres

One cannot separate a human from their faith. Having a place to worship or connect with one’s spiritual self is as important to a human as going to school or a cinema hall. Places of worship like temples, churches, masjids, gurudwaras, monasteries , etcetera; and spiritual or meditation centres serve as places for gathering and become important landmarks in a settlement.

Conservation and Heritage Projects

19. Conservation of Heritage Structures

Conservation of the priceless built heritage like palaces, monuments, places of worship, ancient settlements, etc has always been on the agenda of organisations like UNESCO and the Archeological Survey of India. If historical significance gets your heart rate up, hi history nerd! Help in conserving our heritage structures !

20. Adaptive Reuse of Heritage Buildings

History nerd, if you’re still here, here’s another architecture thesis topic for you. Some heritage can be conserved to attract tourists and some that are too out-of-order could be modified and reused for a different purpose, generating economy. Converting royal palaces into heritage hotels, a king’s court into an emergency ward for covid patients or factories into community spaces, adaptive reuse of the built form requires fine skill, respect for heritage, and an active imagination!

Offices/ Corporate Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project on an office tower by some undergraduate students

21. Government Buildings

Workspaces for all government officials are mandatory for smooth administration. The scale of government buildings is diverse, from the Central Vista Redevelopment Project (*ahem*) to a district-sessions court. Some common categories are high courts, government-owned banks, secretariat and corporation buildings , income-tax offices, assembly and gathering centres , media offices and so on.

Sounds boring? Don’t be so sure. What originally sounds typical is where there is maximum potential to surprise your critics!

22. Corporate Office Towers

We all have seen or at least talked about the famous corporate jungles of our towns. They not only serve as important landmarks but help in increasing the economic value of a region (Very SEZ-y!). If you wanna tame the jungle, you could explore corporate office-building design for your architecture thesis topic.

23. Co-working and Remote-working Spaces

A popular trend before COVID was sharing workspaces, which now have the potential to be thought of as remote-working spaces! Rethinking the design of co-working spaces is very relevant to the times and has great scope for innovation.

With the times we live in, this could be the best architecture thesis topic!

Entertainment and Commercial Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project on an urban entertainment centre

24. Theatres and Auditoria

Who doesn’t like good showtime with family and friends? Theatres, auditoria and performance centres are the core of spaces showcasing and witnessing talent, and fall under another typology which has the potential to be reworked post-pandemic. The design of such entertainment stations can test the knowledge of large-span structures without losing a strong grip on creativity and functionality.

25. Multiplexes and Malls

Malls and multiplexes are very popular among the masses as they possess multiple brands of shopping, entertainment and food centres. Whether or not you agree with the mall typology, more keep coming up in growing towns every year. So why not study how they work and improve the concept for your architecture thesis project? The consumerist urbania will thank you!

26. Marketplaces

Shopping for groceries and essential commodities is a frequent need, and most people head to a single marketplace for all their essential goods shopping. A place with a high frequency of movement requires meticulous and thorough design, but can also be one of the most fun challenges to take up! Think farmer markets, community-owned produce markets, mandis, harbour fish markets, and flea markets, the possibilities are endless!

27. Mixed-Use Hubs

Taking your design challenge up a notch is by taking up a mixed-use hub . This is a high-density area that caters to more than one function and has mega economic value. It could be a combination of residential, commercial, institutional, or hospitality, commercial and public space, or much more. This concept is taken to another level by bringing transit hubs into the fray with transit-oriented development!

28. Film, Photo and Animation Studios

The use of digital media has increased multifold in the past couple of decades. A lot of creatives express themselves through digital content, increasing the need for more film , photo, animation and integrated studios . Since these functions can be highly specialised, there is a lot of potential to do impressive research for your architecture thesis project!

Hospitality and Tourism Projects

Render of an architecture thesis project of an eco-tourist hub of Khonoma village, by Shanjo A. Kithan

29. Eco-Tourism Resorts and Visiting Centres

Imagine spending a weekend at a secluded place, close to nature, with all the facilities you need to relax and just de-stress! Ecological resorts and tourist visiting centres aim to cause as little damage to the environment as possible. Keen on environmental sustainability, eco-tourism resorts should be encouraged in the tourism and hospitality industry and make for very relevant architecture thesis topics.

Landscape architecture enthusiasts, where are you all at?

30. Backpacker Lodging/ Youth Hostels

While the question of travel arises, not everyone can afford finely kempt hotels or resorts to lodge at. The youth may opt for backpacking trips to save money as well as to have an interesting experience! Backpacking/ youth hostels like Zostel and Nomads World are buzzing for their affordability, convenience and prospects of networking with like-minded people. If this is your jam, consider creating innovative spaces for it!

Futuristic/ Sci-fi/ Conceptual Projects

Render of a conceptual architectural design for urban agriculture

How about a settlement on Mars? Or a concert hall in the air? A transit hub of 2050? A forest within the city? Perhaps a residential colony on the water!

Such futuristic or conceptual architecture thesis topics are all the more enthralling as they might not have any precedents. They stretch a creative brain to its limit, and in the process may transform into a brilliant idea. Challenging conventions, thinking out of the box and taking up a futuristic architecture thesis project could be your achievement (both in design and in convincing the faculty) as a young designer!

Having read about some common architecture thesis topics, it is important to know that you must not be limited to the above list. Your architecture thesis is your own brainchild, and it does not need to conform or even fit within a category.

A great architecture thesis is also a key ingredient in creating a kickass architecture portfolio ! So give your all. Who knows, you may even end up receiving an award for your architecture thesis !

Hoping you found the inspiration you were looking for!

India Unveiled: Innovative Projects and Evolving Builtscapes

research topics in architecture in india

  • Written by Ankitha Gattupalli
  • Published on December 23, 2023

In recent years, India has emerged as a focal point for architects and urban designers from around the world. From the rich legacy of masters and emerging firms to smart city initiates being established across the peninsula, the acts of decolonization in architecture design to the evolution of a modernized vernacular, India has been demonstrating the power of supporting good architecture and urban design. This year, ArchDaily launched ArchDaily Building for Billions , a column that discusses the effects of population rise, urbanization, and economic growth on India’s built environment. Building for Billions was fueled by the recognition of changes and innovative projects washing over the country.

India Unveiled: Innovative Projects and Evolving Builtscapes - Image 2 of 12

India, with its ambitious growth plans, stands as a powerful economic force on the global stage. The country boasts one of the world's fastest-growing economies, a thriving start-up ecosystem, and flourishing sectors in technology, digital services, and manufacturing. However, alongside these achievements, India deals with challenges brought about by its expanding population, including issues of density, infrastructure, social inequality, and environmental sustainability in its built environment.

With its contrasting and complex context, India presents a unique canvas for designers to create solutions that address urban challenges. The series focuses on local architects and urban designers spearheading development in India's built environment. The country serves as a case study for the future of cities, offering insights into rapid urbanization, technological innovations, economic growth, cultural dynamics, governance complexities, and the need for resilience in the face of natural disasters.

India's importance to the global design community lies in the valuable lessons it offers for the rest of the world. The series seeks to understand and contextualize the design discourse in India and the multiple projects emerging from it:

As ArchDaily continues to explore India's urban landscape, it aims to cover thought-provoking ideas related to slums, megacities, cultural preservation, and sustainable development. The column will engage with visionaries, future-builders, and thought leaders to discuss how India can achieve its goals in the next few decades. In 2024, Building for Billions will continue to contribute to the discourse on India's built environment, providing a platform to discuss and understand the evolving urban fabric of the country.

This article is part of the ArchDaily Topics: Year in Review , presented by Randers Tegl . “When creating unique architecture, visionary ideas aren’t always enough. A unique look demands character, courage, and distinctive materials. And a format to achieve the extraordinary. At Randers Tegl , we aim to add a unique touch to exceptional brickworks by bringing premium bricks to life and into the world of architecture. Making the impossible possible. We are proud to be a part of unique architecture worldwide since 1911.” Every month we explore a topic in-depth through articles, interviews, news, and architecture projects. The Changing Culture of Architecture in Modern India

Ar. Apurva Bose Dutta

The changing culture of architecture in modern  India , both as a lifestyle and as a profession, has been eye-opening. In terms of lifestyle, we never predicted the extent to which architecture and design could affect us as well as the society and culture we live in, nor did we predict how deeply symbolic of our beliefs and attitudes they’d become. As a profession, the huge wave of development and technology that caused us to try and ape everything that didn’t belong to us, has made us question and search for our own identity and provoked us to revisit the solid traditional roots and foundation of Indian architecture .

The 'Architect' in Architecture

The ‘architect’ has evidently lost the authorship and exclusivity s/he once possessed—an observation that might be visible not only in India but in the profession worldwide. Today, the collaborative role of architecture instead rests on developers, clients, various consultants, and foreign firms, somewhere subduing the voice of the architect.

Speaking for the profession in India, it is imperative that the role of the architect be acknowledged more strongly, especially in the planning of cities. The Indian government’s massive Smart Cities Mission , which aims to develop 100 sustainable and citizen-friendly cities all over the country, has done very little to include architectural voices into the conversation. Same goes for our heritage structures that are being replaced by modern structures despite resistance shown by architects.

As a result, architects are making efforts and are regularly creating platforms that can give way to solutions to better architecture. Practitioners such as Karan Grover, Rahul Mehrotra and Naresh Narasimhan have begun to assume the role of activist. In addition to certain professional bodies like the Council of Architecture, Indian Institute of Architects and Indian Institute of Interior Designers, a lot of cities have very active architects’ groups who meet, interact, disseminate, and share their views on the profession and issues surrounding it. Numerous international architecture conventions are also creating opportunities of increased visibility. Here, major discussions on burning topics such as sustainability and the green movement, integration of urban planning and architecture, and the role of architects in the planning of cities, are being explored. These conversations about how architecture professionals can better society are also beginning to include conversations with planners, governmental bodies, environmentalists, citizens and psychologists.

Women’s participation in the field is definitely growing worldwide, but particularly so in India, where they are contributing to architecture and planning in a myriad of ways and are holding authoritative positions. This is a far cry from the gender-biased profession architecture was in India even a decade back. Needless to say, on many forums, it is the women who are initiating changes.

The Need to Look at 'Cities,' Rather than just 'Buildings'

Many of India’s major cities are experiencing issues of infrastructure, basic planning, and sanitation, though they receive little attention. While smaller cities are proving to be great examples, there is still a need to look at urban planning from scratch. India does have a few architects such as Christopher Charles Benninger , whose focus has been to integrate architecture and urban planning . Numerous architects in the country have realized that working in silos and for their own buildings alone might not work. Many are beginning to look at the larger picture within their cities, and rather than focusing solely on individual projects, are seeing the need for architecture to engage with cities.

Considering how architecture can affect the socio-cultural imprint of a city, the social responsibility of an architect is being profoundly displayed

Considering how architecture can affect the socio-cultural imprint of a city, the social responsibility of an architect is being profoundly displayed by a handful of architects in the country such as Brinda Somaya , Pratima Joshi , PK Das and Abha Narain Lambah , who are working on community architecture and are passionately involved with restoring or conserving heritage structures. Then there are architects like Nimish Patel and Parul Zaveri , Bijoy Jain and Girish Dariyav Karnawat whose works have not only brought forth the immense resource of ’craftspeople’ that we have in the country, but has also helped in uplifting these ‘treasures.’

Architects are joining in social movements and demanding public dialogues to curb the disconnect between what people want and what is being offered to them. In terms of safety and security, architects like Neera Adarkar are bringing into focus the ‘gendering of spaces’ and concepts such as ‘eyes on the street.’ There has also been a surge of non-profit organizations in the country, who are not only voicing their opinions on the degradation of design and cities, but are physically working on solutions. Through this, citizens are able to participate in building their cities like never before. Now, there are even opportunities for citizens to participate in and provide feedback for master-planning, a recent example being Bengaluru.

The Shift in Design Sensibilities

The growing economy and population has led to enormous housing needs, driving the extent of architectural work and creating massive opportunities in the country. It is also one of the reasons why the number of foreign architectural firms working in India has increased. In the aftermath of cities burdened by the lack of infrastructure, the opportunity to design and make a difference in India has become immense. This has also led to the increasing number of Indian architects, who, after receiving their architectural education overseas, have returned to India to practice and be a part of the shift the country is going through.

An influence from the West, glass and designer-shaped buildings began as design statements some years back, but are now shunned by responsible architects for their out-of-context implementation. Indian architecture is seeing many explorations. Though globalization is widely influencing the architecture being built in India today, the need and anxiety to localize is also fiercely felt by many.

Glass, steel and aluminium might remain as ‘fashionable’ materials, but there has been a shift in sensibilities with the revival of Indian crafts

Glass, steel and aluminium might remain as ‘fashionable’ materials, but there has been a shift in sensibilities with the revival of Indian crafts and the use of natural and alternative materials such as brick, mud, clay, bamboo, wood, stone, etc. Significantly, many architects such as Krishnarao Jaisim, Neelam Manjunath , Sathya Prakash Varanashi, Chitra Vishwanath , Anupama Kundoo , Yatin Pandya , Dean D’Cruz and Samira Rathod are innovatively bringing forward these materials to create statements. India can also take pride in its legends like Didi Contractor , an 88-year old woman, whose training in architecture has not been formal but come from Didi's empirical knowledge attributed to her wide reading and exposure to the field. Even at this age today, her work with mud and clay have revealed how we all should turn to nature for our answers.

The concepts of sustainability and ‘going green’ have become commonplace though some architects and real estate builders use these terms more so as marketing gimmicks rather than as a mandate for responsible design. Discussions around the two have taken center stage at architectural forums, conveying the urgency felt by architects and planners in India to correctly interpret and use them.

The importance of context, sustainability, nature, and creating an architecture that is true to our culture and cultivates an ‘Indian identity’ has gained much credence. The works of legends such as  Charles Correa , BV Doshi, Raj Rewal , Laurie Baker , CN Raghavendran , Shiv Datt Sharma , among others, have long represented Indian architecture on international platforms. Today, a lot of younger contemporary practices in India have joined them, such as Sanjay Puri Architects , Mathew & Ghosh Architects and Morphogenesis who are making waves overseas for their futuristic thinking that rests on a traditional ethos and the core tenets of a contextual, responsible and resourceful architecture. Apart from globally positioning themselves at expos, biennials and award competitions, Indian architects are doing a fair amount of work overseas too.

The adaptation to technology has also been appreciable with advancements being successfully integrated in design aspects. India’s emerging architects have exemplified a lot of fresh work that could be grouped under ‘contemporary Indian sensibility'—a sensibility that takes the roots and ethos of Indian architecture and integrates them into contemporary vocabulary. The step towards bold and experimental architecture has already been taken, for example, in the work done by Malik Architects and Planet 3 Studios. Many are involved in a critical reinterpretation of how buildings and spaces should be.

For many architects in the country, architecture is not merely about the ‘aesthetics,’ it is about functionality

The re-conceptualisation of spaces has been a revelation too. There are several architects such as Sanjay Mohe and Sandeep Khosla who have focused on the spatial experiences of the built environment. For them, as for many others, it’s about designing buildings as spaces, and not merely ‘objects.’ Even once forgotten spaces like kitchens and bathrooms are now seeing makeovers as they become spaces of immense significance. For many architects in the country, architecture is not merely about the ‘aesthetics,’ it is about functionality, about a ‘way of living’, about how the profession can affect us.

What the Profession Also Needs

Changing lifestyles have transformed the meaning of architecture for many. The perils of technological exploitation, excessive virtual networking leading to failures in proper communication, the dependence on patrons and well-travelled clients, and the diminishing importance given to culture and heritage are the challenges facing architecture in India today. There is lots of information available, but is it being converted into knowledge? While changing lifestyles have impacted architecture, it is important for the profession to ruminate on how it can in turn make a lasting impact on transforming lifestyles.

The profession’s woes also have a lot to do with architectural education in India, which has been deteriorating over the decades and could use an overhaul. Though the field has a lot of well-acclaimed academics in India, the unexpected proliferation of architecture schools and the easy path to licensure have been huge sources of consternation in India, as has the curriculum and faculty. So much so that a small number of firms have even taken upon themselves to hold smaller academic programs, and train students themselves.

The role of Indian media in architecture and design, has also remained very limited. There are very few people in the country who have taken it upon themselves to make a difference to architecture and cities through writing. Though the subject of writing on architecture has seen much growth in the past few years with people expressing their interest towards it, one would like to see the Indian media getting into more participatory roles and becoming an analytical weapon in making everyone realize how architecture and planning can affect cities.

To conclude, Indian architecture is in a state of flux where we have everything—explorations, opportunities, experiments and evolved sensibilities—and a step in the right direction could yield great results and maybe help in re-discovering what we have lost. The need of the hour is to not be carried away with what is happening around us, but to understand our needs, our expectations, our roots and work towards an architecture that adapts to changing lifestyles but stays true to its values and identity; that communicates to people and shapes our society; that helps in building memories and gives us buildings and spaces that can sustain till posterity.

Ar. Apurva Bose Dutta ( www.apurvabose.com ) is an author and award-winning architectural journalist from India. An alumna of the Chandigarh College of Architecture, with a diploma in freelance journalism from the U.K., Apurva has spent the past 12 years writing about the A/E/C industry, bringing every aspect to the forefront. While she is working towards making architectural journalism a mainstream profession in India through her various initiatives, she also wants to highlight journalism as THE medium to talk about, critique, and create a demand for better architecture for society.

Her recent book,  " ARCHITECTURAL VOICES OF INDIA: A Blend of Contemporary and Traditional Ethos" (published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing, UK), brings out the voices of 19 illustrious architects from India across generations, conversing through dialogues about the core issues and perspectives around architecture. These voices bring to the forefront unique and inspirational journeys, varied design philosophies and building typologies, the evolution of architecture and a reflection on the new role that architects should play, and the state of the profession in India and globally. Awesome & inspiring article... makes me wanna come back!

This IS inspiring, in large part because it seem that there are a lot of influential architects in India who do not want to go down the same internationalist road as China or many parts of the Middle East. Not wanting their culture to wash away in the quest for modernity.  Bravo.

This quote says a lot:

"Architects are joining in social movements and demanding public dialogues to curb the disconnect between what people want and what is being offered to them."

Articles like these will surely provide insight to us freshers in the profession about the current state of Indian Architecture and inspire us to explore our heritage and culture.

On a path towards "Re-discovering what we have lost".

Dear Ar.Dutta,

A very well written article, explaining how the Indian architects voice needs to be heard and Incorporated in our micro and macro level planning.

Especially, the use of sustainable materials and proper town planning.

Any country that respects the wisdom of it's at hitects sees marvellous results in terms of development and the society at large lives a very comfortable life!

Please keep writing these insightful articles and hopefully our architectural sector gets more organized so that we can make an impact on the Indian cityscapes!

The article has concerns with focus on the current situation. I agree with the views expressed, In all the changes that are happening around the cities, I observe a distinct silent professional tug of war between two Groups being played on the cities built habitat. NPEEE ( supporting earth quake resistance structures) dominated by Engineers and The other Group is the Fraternity of Conservation and Heritage Architects. NPEEE would like to Raze down as many existing timber structures in the old city and propose RCC buildings with Earthquake resistance structures. Conservation Architects would want to  preserve and restore while updating with structural stability norms. But Sadly Engineers and Developers seem to be faster in actions than Architects. The case of the Himalayan range and near by settlements are ample proof where local building technology has been replaced for fear of Earthquakes and floods. Innovations are required to provide safe structures while retaining Local identities and architectural style.
